Here, we present the three most common ways to install a Bluebird box. Once you’ve decided how to place it, we advise checking if you have the necessary additional materials to install it correctly. If not, you can always purchase them at your nearest general store.
You can attach one or more hangers (not provided) to the back or roof of the Bluebird house. If you choose this option, drive a screw hook to the surface where you will install your Bluebird house and place it using the hangers.
You may need:
Hangers
Ropes
Retriever
You can hang your nestbox from a tree in areas where snake predation is not a problem. The shade provided by a tree will better preserve temperature inside the nestbox. This especially applies to Western bluebirds in regions such as California.
Take into account that you could need a retriever to hung up or take down boxes from the tree. This is an extendable pole with a hook on the end that is not provided with your order.
Additionally, you may need to attach hangers or use ropes on your Elijebirds bluebird house before being able to hang it. Hangers can be screwed to the back of the Bluebird house or to the roof, depending on the way you will install it on the tree.
Mounting your bluebird box on a smooth round pipe is one of the best placement options as it will prevent predators to access the nestbox.
Place your bluebird house so the entrance hole is not lower than 5 feet above the ground.
If you want to make it more difficult for predators to climb up the pole, coat it with wax and/or add a sheet metal cone, a Kingston wobbling stovepipe or a PVC baffle as shown in the image.
Mounting bluebird boxes on fence lines, tree trunks, or buildings renders them vulnerable to climbing predators. You should choose this option only if there are no predators in your area or if you can have a good control of your nestbox.
Please, check the materials provided in your Elijebirds bluebird house in case you needed additional materials to install your bluebird house.
You can directly attach your birdhouse to the desired surface by driving the screws into the inside of the house.
It is not mandatory to install the Noel guards, especially in regions of the United States where predators are not a problem. If there are predators in the area, know that the Noel guard is 90% effective against cats and raccoons.
Use the small screws provided to attach the Noel guard as seen in the image.
Some tips
Installing Your Bluebird House
Once you've chosen the perfect location for your bluebird house, it's time to install it. Here are a few simple steps to follow:
Choose the right mounting location. Bluebird houses should be mounted in an open area, away from trees and other obstructions. The ideal height is 5-6 feet above the ground.
Attach the house to a post or tree. Use screws or nails provided to secure the house to the post or tree. Make sure the house is level and stable.
Add predator guards. Predator guards can help protect bluebirds from predators such as cats and snakes. If you live in an area where predators could threaten your Bluebird house, you can choose to install the Noel guard
Monitor the house. Once the house is installed, keep an eye on it to see if bluebirds are using it. If you don't see any activity after a few weeks, you may need to adjust the location of the house.
Here are some additional tips for installing your bluebird house:
Avoid placing the house in direct sunlight. Bluebirds prefer to nest in shady spots.
Clean the house out each year. This will help prevent the spread of disease and parasites.
Enjoy watching the bluebirds!. Bluebirds are beautiful and fascinating creatures. Watching them raise their young is a rewarding experience.
